Tools and the Workspace

Tools for metalwork
This page shows the basic tools you will need for metal working. If you are absolutely sure this is what you want to do and you have money to invest then the sky is the limit but it is amazing what you can do with very little equipment, as I have proved to myself. For more detailed information a jewellery technique book is essential. Keep your eyes open for bargains at car boot sales.

metalwork tools

It is possible to make a start metalworking with these basic tools. You have tin snips and fret saw for cutting your metal. The files are used for taking away rough edges. The wet and dry will smooth and the wire wool will clean. All you need is copper sheet to practice on, see recycling. When you have mastered the basic technique you could progress to silver. These tools are not expensive and some could always be picked up at a car boot sale for next to nothing. Always make sure you have seperate tools for copper and precious metals so they are not contaminated. If you cannot afford two sets clean well after use.,

Tools chasing On the left are chasing tools which have different shaped ends. In the middle are tweezers of different sizes for all sorts of uses. On the right are implements used by dentists, again with differently shaped ends extremely helpful with enamelling.

Tools forming To create shapes and dimension to your metal, these tools are just a few that you will need.

Tools forming If you want to make domes and cylinders you will need the two blocks shown at the top of this picture. A steel block is essential.
